Early to blog, early to rise

I’m publishing at dawn today, uncharacteristically. I woke up with the nagging thought that soon I may be prevented somehow from communicating with you, so I decided it’d be best if I got this out of the way early.

Besides, this promises to be a busy week.

To allay any concerns you may have, I’m fine. I’m in a very good place.

The first storm cell grazed The Mountain around 2:45pm yesterday afternoon — a thundering downpour and a bit of hail, lasting all of ten minutes. The next round, 45 minutes later, was similar but weaker.

I’ve become pretty accustomed now to the weather patterns in this part of the country. Decades of familiarity with how systems approach Ohio didn’t translate to The Mid-South — I had to shift my thinking and pay closer attention. It’s a fascinating region.

Rain and hail continued to pelt The Mountain, off and on, until 6:30pm. We escaped without a scratch.

I don’t for a moment believe that everyone who’s been reading my blog posts is supportive or even sympathetic. I know for certain that some folks rant at what I write about my situation, or that I even talk about it at all.

I can live with that.

Regardless, daily views and visitors are four to five times the previous average. (Yesterday was over seven time more.) That’s gratifying to me, because the more people who read about my experience, the more likely it is that it’ll reach someone who feels like they’re alone.

Another point I hope to get across is that it’s okay not to care. No matter how long the relationship or how deep the devotion, saying “I’ll love [INSERT_NAME_HERE] forever!” while under their brutal assault is patently insane.

Don’t waste energy hating — I don’t. But not giving a shit can be the healthiest emotional adjustment a person can make under the circumstances.

Indifference.

I gave due credit recently to my old pals from the gun shop for rallying to my side during these unexpectedly tough times. Their support has been invaluable, and I’m grateful.

There’s another group of good folks standing with me in heartwarming numbers — the people I grew up with. I’m talkin’ ’bout my high-school classmates and friends within a few years of us.

We’ve been bound together by shared experiences for over half a century. It’s my opinion that the most important people we can have in our lives as adults are the ones we’ve known since we were kids.

I cherish those friendships. I’m humbled by the support.

This is destined to be a week of catching up.

Electric service on The Mountain is on the verge of a shutoff order, so I have to head that off. Rent for the storage unit must be brought current as well, to avoid losing everything in it. By tomorrow, I need to transfer my mobile phone off of its current plan and establish my own.

I learned of all this only Saturday afternoon.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
