The big brushpile at the north end of the driveway would give me a chance, I figured, to make decent headway on the firewood front Tuesday. I wanted to get after it early to beat the heat. Then again, I’d be running a gas saw and thought 7am might be a tad too early (even though my closest neighbors are a quarter-mile away).

I waited ’til 9am. That seemed about right.

First, I looked for (and found) targets of opportunity — easy stuff, close to the edges of the pile. Then, of course, I lopped another round off of the big red oak log.

The work proceeded from there, as usual.

Yesterday’s woodswork brought the pallet to about 75%. As much as I enjoy this, I’m glad to say that the end is in sight.

I selected this chunk of white oak (pictured) for my chopping block four years ago, and it’s served in that role the last three. Though battered, it’s still hanging in there. In a fit of sentimentality, I’ve decided not to move on to my new block until this year’s splitting is done.

Blossoms on a honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) in the woods north of the well shed.

There’s still a little chill in store before winter releases its grip on Ozarkansas.

Take care of yourselves, Patriots. Stay calm. Stay sharp. Stay free.
